EUDI Wallet Use Cases

The EUDI Wallet's applications are present in nearly every aspect of life. The following examples provide an overview of the use cases that have gained the most traction.

Identification

Enables users to prove their identity digitally using official credentials stored in their EUDI Wallet such as a Person Identification Data (PID). Ideal for onboarding processes like opening a bank account or accessing public services.

Authentication / Login

Use the EUDI Wallet for secure and seamless login to digital services. Supports Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) under PSD2, replacing SMS codes or passwords with wallet-based verification that meets eIDAS 2 requirements.

Qualified Electronic Signatures

Allow users to digitally sign contracts and documents with the same legal value as a handwritten signature. The EUDI Wallet integrates with Qualified Trust Service Providers (QTSPs) to issue and execute compliant QES processes.

Credentialing

The EUDI Wallet enables organisations to issue and verify verifiable credentials in a secure and standardised way. These include Electronic Attestations of Attributes (EAA), such as tickets, social passes or loyalty cards. When issued by Qualified Trust Service Provider, these become Qualified EAAs (QEAA) carrying legal trust under eIDAS 2. Additionally, Public EAAs (PubEAA) are credentials issued by public authorities and recognised across EU member states.

FAQs

Find answers to common questions about the European Digital Identity Wallet and eIDAS 2 Regulation.

What is the EUDI Wallet?

The European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) is a secure digital identity app that allows EU citizens and businesses to identify themselves online and offline. It enables trusted access to public and private services, supports electronic signatures, and allows storage of credentials such as IDs, driving licences, or payment data, all under user control and in compliance with EU regulations.

What is eIDAS 2 and how does it relate to the EUDI Wallet?

eIDAS 2 is the updated version of the EU’s electronic identification regulation. It introduces the legal framework for the EUDI Wallet, making it mandatory for all member states to offer citizens a government-recognized digital identity solution by 2026. eIDAS 2 ensures interoperability, legal validity of digital signatures, and trust across borders within the EU

When will the EUDI Wallet become mandatory in the EU?

The EUDI Wallet is expected to be rolled out across the EU starting in 2026, following the adoption of eIDAS 2 and accompanying Implementing Acts. While the timeline may vary slightly by country, relying parties, so public and private service providers in regulated sectors must prepare to support EUDI Wallet-based identification and authentication one year after this deadline (2027).

What is Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) with the EUDI Wallet?

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) with the EUDI Wallet allows users to securely log in, confirm payments, or access sensitive services using at least two factors (e.g. possession, biometrics, PIN). It replaces legacy methods like SMS codes or passwords with wallet-based, standards-compliant authentication aligned with PSD2 and eIDAS 2.

What is a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) and how does it work with the EUDI Wallet?

A Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) is the highest legal standard for digital signatures in the EU. It has the same legal value as a handwritten signature and can be performed using the EUDI Wallet. Only a Qualified Trust Service Provider (QTSP) can issue a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES), and the wallet must support secure cryptographic signing. However, every relying party can validate a QES.

How can banks and public institutions prepare for the EUDI Wallet?

Banks and government agencies should begin technical preparation now. This includes integrating an EUDI Wallet Connector API software, supporting credential verification (like PID), and aligning with eIDAS 2 requirements. Companies like Lissi offer production-ready software and guidance to support SCA, KYC, and QES flows, ensuring EUDI Wallet readiness before 2026.
